Effective PTSD & Trauma Treatment in Austin
Resolve Trauma Through EMDR Therapy & Evidence-Based Psychotherapy
Trauma changes the brain — but the brain can heal. At Lake Austin Psychotherapy, we specialize in evidence-based treatment for PTSD and trauma from anywhere in Texas, including EMDR therapy, somatic-based approaches, and structured psychotherapy.
PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event — combat, assault, abuse, accidents, medical trauma, sudden loss, or any experience that overwhelms your ability to cope. Symptoms may include intrusive memories or flashbacks, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, difficulty sleeping, avoidance of reminders, and a persistent sense that the world is no longer safe. These symptoms can persist for months or years and significantly impact relationships, work, and quality of life.
You don't have to keep managing around the trauma. Treatment can resolve it.
How We Treat PTSD in Austin
EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most extensively researched treatments for PTSD. It uses bilateral stimulation — such as guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to describe the trauma in detail or relive painful experiences at length. Many clients describe the process as feeling "distanced" from the memory — it's still there, but it no longer carries the same activating punch.
Our clinical director, Mary K. Moore, LPC, is an EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapist — a credential that requires extensive supervised practice and ongoing continuing education. EMDR can be performed in person at our West Austin offices or remotely via secure telehealth anywhere in Texas.
Talk Therapy & Integrative Approaches
Not every case of PTSD requires EMDR. For some clients, structured talk therapy using trauma-informed approaches — including somatic-based therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, and cognitive behavioral methods — is the right path. Our clinicians tailor treatment to your specific experience, symptoms, and goals. We take the time to understand what you've been through and build a treatment plan that meets you where you are.
